Interested in nominating yourself or another for an award? Review the following steps carefully. Questions can be directed to the Macademics Student Recognition Awards Coordinator: macademicsawards@msu.mcmaster.ca.
If you are nominating yourself for an award:
- Review the awards below, including the criteria for the award, and select the one that suits you best. You can apply for more than one!
- Click the thumbnail below titled “Click Here to Nominate Yourself.” You will be re-directed to a Microsoft Form.
- Fill out the Microsoft Form in its entirety, and be sure to include all requested documentation.
- Submit the Microsoft Form by Monday, February 9, 2026.
If you are nominating someone else for an award:
- Review the awards below, including the criteria for the award, and select the one that suits your candidate best.
- Click the thumbnail below titled “Click Here to Nominate Someone Else.” You will be re-directed to a Microsoft Form.
- Fill out the Microsoft Form in its entirety, and be sure to include all requested documentation.

The Honour M, the highest award that the McMaster Students Union (MSU) bestows, has been presented annually since 1932 in recognition of outstanding leadership, volunteer service, contribution and/or special achievement in extra-curricular activities. Nominee must be an MSU member who shall normally be in the final year of their academic programme.
Eligibility:
A nominee’s contributions may have been completed in such areas as university, student, or residence governments, departments, clubs, societies, charities, or athletics. Nominees must have completed at least two (2) years of MSU membership (i.e. two fall/winter academic years of enrolment in at least eighteen (18) units of undergraduate study) and shall normally be in the final year of their academic programme.
A panel of student leaders, faculty, and a member of the Honour Society will select recipients of the award. Barring special circumstances, no more than three (3) awards are normally granted each year.

The J. Lynn Watson Award for Community Service has been presented annually since 1983 by the McMaster Students Union to the campus group that has made the greatest one-year contribution to charitable giving.
Eligibility:
A group’s contributions should:
- Provide a learning opportunity for students in the area of community service;
- Encourage staff, teams, and students to contribute in a meaningful way to a charitable cause;
- Enhance the visibility of McMaster University in the Hamilton community and work towards creating a positive community presence; and,
- Demonstrate McMaster University’s commitment to serving the social, cultural, and economic needs of our community and our society.
Barring special circumstances, no more than one (1) award is granted each year.

The MSU Merit Scholarship Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding and valuable service to university, student, or residence governments, departments, clubs, societies, charities, or athletics. The nominee must be an MSU member who is not in the final year of his or her academic programme.
Eligibility:
Each candidate is only eligible to receive the award once in each category, and no candidate may receive an award in both categories in the same year. To be eligible, a candidate must hold MSU membership (i.e. enrolment in at least eighteen (18) units of undergraduate study) and must not be in the final year of their academic programme.

The MSU Spirit Award is presented annually to the campus group that has demonstrated superior spirit throughout the academic year.
Eligibility:
The Selection Committee will consider those campus groups that best represent enthusiasm, participation, dedication, and increasing school spirit at McMaster University.
Barring special circumstances, it is recommended that no more than one (1) award be granted each year.

The Rudy Heinzl Award of Excellence has been presented annually since 1997 in recognition of an outstanding one-year achievement which improves the lives of students at McMaster University.
History of the Award:
In his 33 years of service at McMaster, including 11 years as Dean of Student Affairs, Rudy Heinzl displayed an uncommon dedication to the concerns of students. Through this award the MSU honours his contribution by commemorating the work of others who have similarly contributed to the well-being of McMaster’s student community.
Eligibility:
Any member of the McMaster community is eligible for the award. No more than one (1) award is granted each year.

MSU Students of Distinction Award
The MSU Students of Distinction Award is granted in recognition of internal and external individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to the betterment of the MSU or student life at McMaster.
The nominator must attach a letter of no more than 1,000 words detailing how this individual/group made an outstanding contribution to the McMaster Students Union (MSU) or life at McMaster University. Applications for the MSU Students of Distinction award are accepted year round. There is no deadline to apply!
