Student Representative Assembly passes motion in support of students affected by violence in the Middle East

At the November 12 meeting of the Student Representative Assembly (SRA), members debated and passed a resolution in support of students affected by violence in the Middle East.

McMaster students are in pain. Many have lost friends and family members in Palestine and in Israel, and the immediate future remains grim. Further, students have noted a rise of anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, as well as anti-Palestinian and anti-Israeli racism, at McMaster University and internationally. McMaster students asked their student government to give voice to their pain.

The resolution was not drafted in isolation. Rather, it was the result of multiple rounds of consultation efforts with student groups and MSU clubs from various backgrounds and outlooks, having sought input from a diverse student body. Amongst many items resolved by the SRA, are the core beliefs that student leaders condemn racism and hate speech in all forms, continue to endorse a campus culture of inclusion and safety, and have a goal to promote and support peaceful events, dialogue, and discourse on campus. In addition, the McMaster Students Union will make a financial contribution of $15,000 split evenly between the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund, Hamilton’s Anti-Racism Resource Centre, Hamilton Jewish Family Services, and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
