Ward 1 Candidates

City Councillor · Ward 1

Who Are the Ward 1 Candidates?

Meet the candidates running for City Councillor in Ward 1.

Mark Powell

Mark Powell

Mark Powell, a local, semi-retired carpenter and lifelong resident of Ward 1, has been engaging in political activism for the last six years. This activism included challenging Bill 156, which led to successful amendments.

Powell’s campaign has two main pillars. The first focuses on Ward 1-specific needs, such as supporting the development and maintenance of affordable housing, roads, and parks, and providing disclosure on past expenses, Ward 1 initiatives, and lobbying.

The second pillar focuses on citywide initiatives such as preventing AI data centres, improving transit, addressing the housing crisis, and reducing or freezing high City Hall salaries to decrease the overall yearly budget.

At the core of Powell’s campaign are transparency, open communication, and community input.

Nathan Savelli

Nathan Savelli

Nathan Savelli is the chair of the Environmental Committee at Compass Community Health and teaches at Mohawk College. As the youngest of five siblings, all proud Hamiltonians, he is running to put people and the planet first.

Savelli has a “relentless work ethic.” Being a year-round cyclist may give him further insights on infrastructure improvement and development.

His core values include empathy, integrity, fairness, sustainability, and accountability. He recognizes Hamiltonians’ concerns about homelessness and the drug use crisis, alongside rising property taxes and the affordability crisis. Transparency in public service is one of his key principles.

His platform focuses on investing public funds in affordable housing and co-ops, collaborating with Good Shepherd and Indwell to help combine health care efforts, and working with local Indigenous organizations such as Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing.

Additionally, he wants to support renters by expanding funding for the legal clinic and non-police crisis intervention teams.

Maureen Wilson

Maureen Wilson

Maureen Wilson was first elected to Hamilton City Council in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022. As Ward 1 Councillor, her work focuses on issues that directly affect residents, including affordable housing, public transit, childcare, safer streets, public spaces, environmental protection, infrastructure, and support for local businesses.

Before joining City Council, Maureen held senior staff positions in Hamilton’s local and regional governments and served as Mayor Bob Wade’s Chief of Staff for two years following amalgamation. She holds master’s degrees in urban planning and political science.

During her first term, Maureen served on numerous City committees, including the Audit, Finance and Administration Committee, General Issues Committee, Hamilton Board of Health, and Affordable Housing Site Selection Sub-Committee.

She also serves on the Advisory Committee for Immigrants & Refugees, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Advisory Committee, the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion, and local Business Improvement Areas.
