WGEN educates the McMaster community in an effort to create a campus free from prejudice and discrimination on the basis of gender expression and/or gender identity. WGEN services as a participant in supporting survivors of gender-based discrimination, sexual assault, and/or similar forms of violence. WGEN develops and strengthens relationships between McMaster students, staff, and members of the community by providing information, resources, programming, and on-campus advocacy around gender-based oppressions.

Safe(r) Space Volunteers will perform 2 to 3 hours of space facilitation and peer support within the WGEN space, as assigned. They are responsible for building and maintaining a safe(r) space for students of all genders and survivors of domestic, intimate partner, sexual, and gender-based violence. They will do so by working with the Executives and other volunteers to facilitate, maintain, and advertise the safe(r) space, as well as WGEN events including social events, workshops, and campaigns.

  • Awareness and understanding of topics associated with WGEN (i.e. racism, hetero-cissexism, ableism, settler colonialism, transmisogyny, heteronormativity, intersecting oppressions and invisible privilege, and sexual and gender-based violence).
  • Confidence and ability to challenge dominant and oppressive views
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Communication skills
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Commitment and dedication
  • Ability to work effectively with a team and as an individual

Effort & Responsibility

  • Maintain confidentiality of all individuals accessing the WGEN
  • Continuously work to develop and maintain a safe(r) space, including ensuring the accessibility of the space
  • Attempt, within own capacities, to cover at least one shift per month
  • Attend any required training sessions
  • Continue working on own learning and growth

Working Conditions

  • Most duties can be performed in a shared office space

  • Necessary training will be provided
