Junior Information Technology (IT) Technician (SOP or Internship)

Please note this is a FULL TIME, one-year contract. This position is also entitled to an extensive benefits package. Applicants must be a graduating full-time undergraduate student (taking 18 units or more) at the time of applying or have been an MSU member within the last 12 months. This position may also be taken as a co-op through the Faculty of Engineering.

General Purpose & Scope

Further, it will seek to facilitate communication between the student body, the University and other organizations and will organize and regulate student self-government.

Budget/Finances/Materials

  • Assist in the selection and implementation of new computer software and hardware. 
  • Assist the IT Department with periodic hardware and software audits across the MSU to ensure equipment is recorded and accounted for. 

Internal Communications/Collaboration

  • Communicate and corroborate with the Senior IT Technician to identify key areas for work. 
  • Offer effective and reliable communication with MSU staff to ensure technical support is made available. 
  • Discuss potential IT projects with relevant staff members, where appropriate. 

Innovation/Initiative 

  • Assist in the development and implementation of IT projects, as requested by the Senior IT Technician and/or the Director of IT on occasion. 

Judgement/Thinking 

  • Assist in the reallocation of displaced computer systems, including the formatting and reinstall of system software. 
  • Collaborate with members of the IT Department to ensure the security of information within MSU-owned technical systems. 

Decisions/Actions

  • Assist in the proper preparation of all systems removed from the network to ensure the secure disposal of network assets and confidential removal of all information contained on the equipment. 
  • Offer firmware/hardware technical support for any staff member(s) in need of additional technical expertise as it pertains to: 
    • Windows and/or Apple workstations and/or laptops; 
    • Networked printers and/or photocopiers of various makes/models; and 
    • Other peripherals (modems, switches, routers, USB devices, etc.).
  • Offer software technical support for any staff member(s) in need of additional technical expertise including, but not limited to, the operations of: 
    • Office Suite; 
    • Antivirus;  
    • Accounting/payroll; 
    • Point of sales (POS) systems; and 
    • Graphic design; scheduling, etc.

  • Eye strain may result from sustained computer monitor usage.

  • May be required to lift, push, and/or relocate heavy technological instruments when necessary.

Job Pressure 

  • Moderate stress on a regular basis, with the opportunity for fluctuations depending on the nature of timelines, issues, or any other factors that may impact the workload of the IT Department. 

Work Environment 

  •  Servicing some devices often requires the opening and cleaning of dirty and/or dusty instruments, where a breathing mask shall be provided. 

Training & Experience 

Required 

  • Experience with operating systems, including: 
    • Windows 7/8/10; and 
      • Mac OS. 
  • Experience with technological devices, including: 
      • Desktop computers; and 
      • Laptop computers. 
  • Experience with software, including: 
    • Microsoft Office 365; and 
    • Antivirus software. 

Preferred 

    • Experience with programming languages, including:
      • Python; 
      • C/C+/C++; or
      • Java script;
      • Microsoft SQL; 
      • R; 
      • Python; 
      • CSS; and 
      • HTML. 
    • Experience with operating systems, including, but not limited to: 
      • Linux. 
    • Experience with technological devices, including but not limited to:
      • Servers; 
      • Modems and routers; and 
      • POS systems. 
    • Experience with software, including, but not limited to: 
      • E-commerce platforms; 
      • Website platforms; 
      • VPNs.
